Why Do Diesel Engines Need DEF?

To meet EPA emission standards, equipment manufacturers traditionally rely on selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems in engines 75 horsepower and higher.

An SCR system injects DEF, which is a colorless solution of 67.5% deionized water and 32.5% pure urea, into the exhaust stream. This causes a chemical reaction that converts harmful nitrogen oxides into harmless nitrogen gas and water vapor. While effective for reducing emissions, DEF’s high water content makes it vulnerable to challenging jobsite conditions. 

Here are a few reasons why:

  • Strict temperature limits: DEF freezes at 12°F and degrades when stored consistently above 86°F.
  • Storage and sunlight risks: Direct sunlight breaks down the urea, while unsealed containers can allow dirt and dust to contaminate the fluid.
  • Specialized handling: Protecting fluid quality requires heated totes, insulated jugs and shaded storage, which can all add extra costs to the jobsite.

Since SCR systems rely on interconnected components, contamination from dust, dirt or degraded fluid can trigger a fault code on the machine. A technician would need to flush the system and clear the codes in order for the machine to get back to work.
